Armstrong Siddeley Motors was formed in 1919 from the combination of Siddeley-Deasy and Armstrong Whitworth interests. Its automobiles were generally positioned as refined, well-engineered British cars, often distinguished by the company’s sphinx emblem and widespread use of Wilson preselector transmissions. Postwar models carried aviation-inspired names such as Lancaster, Hurricane and Sapphire, reflecting the company’s deep aerospace connections. Car production ended in 1960 as the business increasingly concentrated on aviation and industrial engineering, leaving a distinctive legacy of conservative-looking but technically interesting automobiles.
