Avanti became an independent American marque after Studebaker ended production of its Raymond Loewy-designed Avanti. Entrepreneurs acquired the tooling and rights and resumed production in 1965 as the Avanti II, retaining the original fiberglass shape while using contemporary American engines and increasingly customized interiors. The company passed through numerous owners and locations over the following decades, with substantial mechanical and styling changes appearing beneath the familiar name. Production ultimately ended in the 2000s. Original 1962–1964 cars remain Studebakers; later cars belong under the Avanti marque.
