South Korean automotive marque that grew from the former Saehan operation after the Daewoo Group took control in the early 1980s. Daewoo expanded rapidly into export markets during the 1990s with compact and midsize cars including the Espero, Lanos, Nubira and Leganza. Financial difficulties led to the automotive business being acquired by General Motors, after which the Daewoo name was progressively replaced by Chevrolet in many markets.
