Japanese manufacturer founded in 1907 and long associated with compact vehicles, kei cars and small commercial vehicles. The company developed particular expertise in space-efficient, economical cars for Japan and Asian markets. Toyota and Daihatsu began cooperating in 1967; Toyota later gained majority control and Daihatsu is now a wholly owned Toyota subsidiary while retaining its own marque identity.
