Russian automobile marque created around AvtoVAZ production at Tolyatti. Its earliest cars were heavily adapted from the Fiat 124 for Soviet conditions and became widely known abroad as Ladas. The marque later developed vehicles including the Niva, an influential compact four-wheel-drive model with unitary construction. Lada remains closely associated with simple, rugged mass-market cars for Russia and neighboring markets.
