NSU

German marque with roots in knitting machinery, bicycles and motorcycles before automobile production began in the early twentieth century. NSU became known for compact cars and later for ambitious rotary-engine development, most famously the technologically advanced Ro 80. Volkswagen acquired control and merged NSU with Auto Union in 1969; that corporate combination ultimately evolved into the modern Audi organization.
