American Motors Corporation was formed in 1954 through the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson. As an independent competitor to Detroit’s Big Three, AMC frequently relied on creative packaging, unusual product decisions and careful use of limited resources. Its history includes the Rambler compacts, Javelin and AMX performance cars, Gremlin and Pacer, and the four-wheel-drive Eagle. AMC also controlled Jeep, a relationship that became especially important when Chrysler acquired the company in 1987. The AMC marque disappeared, but its engineering and product legacy continued within Chrysler.
