Matra

French engineering and automobile marque whose road-car activity grew from the acquisition of René Bonnet’s automotive operation. Matra produced distinctive mid-engined sports cars such as the 530, Bagheera and Murena and later played a central engineering and manufacturing role in the original Renault Espace. Its automobiles were frequently sold through partnerships with larger manufacturers, but Matra-built road cars retain a distinct marque and engineering identity.
