German marque founded by Adam Opel’s family business, which moved from sewing machines and bicycles into automobile production in 1899. Opel grew into one of Germany’s major mass-market manufacturers and was controlled by General Motors for much of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. PSA acquired Opel in 2017, and the marque became part of Stellantis in 2021 while retaining its German identity.
