East German automobile marque produced at Eisenach and named after the nearby Wartburg castle. Wartburg cars used relatively simple two-stroke engines for much of their history, with the 311 and later 353 becoming familiar throughout Eastern Europe. A Volkswagen-sourced four-stroke engine arrived near the end of production, but German reunification and industrial restructuring brought Wartburg automobile manufacture to an end in 1991.
