American automobile marque best known for its central role in producing the lightweight military vehicles that became associated with the Jeep name during the Second World War. Willys-Overland also built passenger cars and later civilian Jeep models. Kaiser acquired Willys in the 1950s, and the Willys name gradually receded as Jeep became the dominant identity. Historic Willys vehicles should not be retroactively relabeled as modern Jeep.
