Introduced in 1969, the Autobianchi A112 was a groundbreaking supermini that redefined urban transportation and set the blueprint for modern hot hatches. Designed as a direct response to the British Mini, the A112 combined Dante Giacosa’s forward-thinking transverse engine, front-wheel-drive layout with a stylish, compact three-door hatchback body.

Under the bonnet, standard models were powered by a series of lively overhead-valve inline-four engines ranging from 903cc to 1,050cc, paired with a 4-speed or later 5-speed manual transmission. Its ultralight curb weight of under 1,500 lbs, tight turning radius, and responsive rack-and-pinion steering made it extraordinarily agile through congested city streets.

Produced across eight distinct series through 1986, the A112 enjoyed an incredible 17-year production run. It achieved legendary status particularly through the high-performance Abarth variants, which offered up to 70 horsepower, upgraded suspension, and sports instrumentation, proving that a micro-compact city car could deliver genuine motorsport thrills.
