Introduced in 1952 as the direct replacement for the A40 Devon, the Austin A40 Somerset was a classic post-war British family sedan that brought modern, aerodynamic styling to Austin’s compact lineup. Styled with distinctive flowing lines, bulbous wings, and a prominent upright front grille, the Somerset reflected Austin’s signature countrified design language of the early 1950s.
Under the bonnet, the Somerset was powered by the dependable 1.2-liter B-Series overhead-valve inline-four engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission operated via a column-mounted gear lever. Producing 42 horsepower, it provided steady performance, solid mechanical durability, and comfortable cruising for everyday motorists and suburban families.
Produced through 1954 in both four-door saloon and two-door convertible body styles, the A40 Somerset achieved remarkable export success, particularly across Commonwealth markets. Celebrated for its plush interior features, smooth ride quality, and classic 1950s aesthetic, it remains a charming icon of early post-war British motoring heritage.
